Rumors are circulating that an X Files 3 might well be on the cards, but it would be straight to DVD.

My whole intention with this blog is to see the X Files back on the big screen, regardless of budget size, and not straight to DVD. I think Mulder and Scully have a lot of potential on the big screen.

So I am happy to see that Frank Spotnitz, the producer of 'I Want To Believe' debunking this rumor on his blog.

I see I Want To Believe is up to $51´000´000 on a $30´000´000 budget. Not bad. Imagine the potential with proper marketing and a better release date.

Otherwise, I was tipped off to this the other day. It´s pretty scandelous if you ask me.

Whats more, whats person would rather watch a movie this way, than on DVD or in the cinema?

Its a crazy crazy world.

I can't believe people didn't like the Simpsons, X Files crossover idea. Don't you even think it would work as a stand alone affair? I think it would be great.

From IMDB news today. This is a great idea...

The X-Files star David Duchovny has long campaigned for writers of the hit show to create an episode featuring animated characters from The Simpsons.

The actor and his co-star Gillian Anderson loaned their voices to the cartoon series for an X-Files-themed guest appearance in 1997.

And Duchovny is convinced that writers on the sci-fi show should have reciprocated and given the Simpson family a cameo role.

He says, "The Simpsons should have come on our show. I had an idea around the seventh or eighth year and thought we should try a (1988 movie) Roger Rabbit-style episode, where they crossed real folk and animation.

"We could do Homer comes to the FBI and deals with cartoon characters. I still feel it's a good idea."

Just looking over the numbers, thats is the box office for ´I Want To Believe´, and it seems the film has broken even on its second weekend on release. That´s including US and international box office.

The film was made for $30 million, and has just hit that mark according to this website.

So I would presume it will turn over a tidy little profit in the end when DVD sales come into the equation.

If you consider with a glass-is-half-full perspective, that doesn´t seem too bad at all.

Another thing which I find interesting is how an awful lot of people still don´t even know about the film. I mentioned the film to a few people here in Germany who claim to be fans of the series and they didn´t even seem to know about the films existance.

Strange.

To prove how un dorkish I am on this whole subject, I've noticed on the petition and various other blogs that people are talking about alien invasions in 2012? They think this would make good subject for another X Files movie.
First, I have no idea where this 2012 stuff is coming from. I didn't watch the last three seasons of the X Files, so if it came from there I wouldn't have a clue. Maybe somebody can enlighthen me as to whats that all about.
Secondly, I quite like the idea that the X Files avoids the alien jargon for a while. The only reason I would suggest bringing that back into the story is if they were going to begin all over again. Do people really need answers to the questions the series posed in the final years when lets be honest, many people turned off as the shows quality dipped dramatically?
I remember arguing with people when I was very young about the X Files. They were frustrated by the fact that the shows concluded open ended. That was the whole point of the show in those days. The show forced you to think, to use your imagination. It was one of the main reasons the show sparked the imagination of so many.
I see no reason why the X Files has to continue as a soap opera. Remember the first few series of the X Files, when it was in its prime? Each episode was stand alone. Aliens only made up about a quarter (or a third) of each series. It was precisely the fact that the series became soap opera-ish in latter years that so many were alienated (no pun intended.)
So while I don't want to go against the ultra fans who will be important in any future the X Files may have, I do wish they'd consider what made the X Files great in the early years.

Belief isn't easy to come by these days. But - despite most reviews - I still believe in The X-Files. Perhaps the biggest problem with this new film (sub-titled I Want to Believe) arises not from the stars (or the production itself), but from ourselves, and -- specifically -- our expectations...

THE QUEST BEGINS

I'm starting this blog as a compassionate plea to the producers of the X Files, and the powers that be (most probably 20th Century Fox), to ignore the criticism and continue to make X Files movies.

Now, instantly this sounds very dorkish and geeky or me I admit, but I consider myself to be neither geek or a dork (but some may argue).

I am infact a 25 year old award winning film maker, blogger, and website creator.

Having heard the recent reviews of the 2nd X Files movie 'I Want To Believe', I was indeed wary of what to expect. As a big X Files fan in my youth, I was a touch disappointed by first movie 'Fight The Future' and desperately saddened by the final three years of the series.

But the truth is the 2nd X Files movie 'I Want To Believe' proved to be quite the surprise. I found the film to be a classic X File - understated, classy and alot more besides.

The film cleverly avoided the mumbo jumbo of alien invasions and government conspiracy which has dragged down the latter series, to give a simple well acted story with characters we have come to love.

The film was tight and well paced from my point of view which gives little room for criticism. If I must, Mulder and Scully kissing and further delving into romantic realms has always irked me, but even that was handled well in the movie.

It's quite clear that peoples expectations of what an X Files movie can be are far off the mark. Added to which, this movie has been released at an appalling time alongside mega budget films such as Batman Begins, Hulk and Iron Man. People expecting anything remotely similar are wide off the mark. It quite apparent that many critics don't have an understanding of the original series, and one should not expect an X Files movie to be anything more than an X Files movie.

People must remember what the X Files was when it began, and was for long after - two people wielding torches in darkened rooms and darkened corridors. It was a testament to the creators, writers, directors and producers that the show ever moved out of these dimensions. But even when it did it did with so with subtly.

I would happily see an X Files movie every 2 or 3 years. The films need not be big budget, the films need not have a huge audience, but I would guess there still is a market out there for it.

I hope I'm stating my case well here. Perhaps I'm not.

With all this in mind, I'm going to begin a petition which you should find at the top of my blog list for an XF3. And until thus films transpires I will try and keep this blog evolving.

With that I would like to ask people with writings on the X Files series or movies to come forward. The writings must be devoid of off the wall fandom. I would be open to interesting critique of the series for instance.

Hopefully I can make all this more clear as time passes.

Bring on XF3!
