The following is a very good insightful review of 'I Want To Believe'. I found it over at Reflections On Film And Television.
Here is it is...
Belief isn't easy to come by these days. But - despite most reviews - I still believe in The X-Files. Perhaps the biggest problem with this new film (sub-titled I Want to Believe) arises not from the stars (or the production itself), but from ourselves, and -- specifically -- our expectations...

I agree with everything you said (and you said it beautifully) - while the expectation for something else was indeed 'there', the end result still brought us the two characters so many of us fell in love with in the first place. Maybe the third movie will be different, now that Chris and David and Gillian see there is still a clamoring for their characters, a need to believe they continue on even without us fans breathing life in to them via our fandom writings. We love Mulder, we love Scully. We love seeing them together fighting for the greater good. Honestly, that's what it is all about, and any true Philer will/would know that in the end, it's all about them, not us. :)
